Do You Really Know Who You Are?

QuestionIt may seem like a strange question, but do you know who you really are? The question came to me after three conversations I had with three amazing women. Each one of them had built successful businesses or non-profits from the ground up. Each of them were talented individuals who had overcome challenges that would cause many people to give up and curl into the fetal position. Not one of them through that they were amazing.

In general, I have found that people discount their own accomplishments. We figure if we could do it then anyone could have done it. In one of my first jobs my boss said to me that I had a very hard life. It was the first time anyone had said that to me. Up until that point, I had thought everyone’s life was just like mine.

Periodically we need to take inventory of what we have done. Objectively list what challenges you have faced. Even if it doesn’t seem major to you, list it. Then do the same with your accomplishments. Neither of these is easy because we do tend to discount our own experiences. Once you have the lists, look at them as though they happened to someone else. You will be surprised by how amazing you really are.
