You’re standing at home plate. Your bat is back and ready to swing. The pitcher throws the ball. It looks like it is coming towards you in slow motion. You aim the bat and take your swing. You connect and the ball goes flying towards the outfield where there is no one to catch it. The entire situation takes less than a second, but it feels like a long time. You are in the zone.
Hopefully everyone has experienced being in the zone at least once. When you are in the zone you feel like you can accomplish anything. It’s useful in business to be able to slip into the zone when things need to be done. How can you get there? Try these three steps:
- Get rest: You cannot get into the zone if you are stressed out. Your body and mind need rest to function properly. When you know you have a big project coming up, make sure you take your weekend off to recharge before taking it on.
- Read books or listen to audiobooks: This is something you need to do on a regular basis. You wouldn’t starve yourself an expect to be able to run a marathon. Your brain needs to be fed as well. Read on a continual basis. Divide your reading into two categories: books to increase your skills and books to entertain. Books to increase your skills can include business, self-improvement, and how-to books. Books to entertain can be fiction or non-fiction as long as you enjoy them. Alternate between these categories to keep your mind active but not overloaded.
- Practice and Plan: An athlete doesn’t just step onto the field and play. He or she practices, anticipates possible plays and practices for them. You need to do the same thing. You need to speculate about what can happen in your business, good and bad. Plan for what you would do in each situation. Practice skills that you use in your business. If you are not comfortable practicing on your own, get a coach or join a mastermind group to help out.
