Yoda Was Wrong

YodaIn The Empire Strikes Back Yoda has a famous line, “Do or do not, there is no try.” While this may be good advice for a Jedi, it is terrible advice for everyone else. If you do not try, you cannot succeed.

If you do something without trying, you are going through the motions. You may get the task done, but you won’t learn anything, you won’t achieve anything. Do is about the result. Try is about the effort. If you are only doing things that require no effort, you’re not moving forward. You are stuck in your comfort zone.

Playing it safe could be curtailing business success. When’s the last time you stepped out of your comfort zone and took on a new challenge? People who regularly seek out fresh experiences tend to be more creative and emotionally resilient than those who remain stuck in routine. Innovation happens when we step outside our comfort zone. Being stagnant in routine often results in plummeting creativity. To be more creative, you have to try new things, see things in a new way, put pieces together in a new manner.

Doming new things requires that you try. You may succeed, you may not. Failure just means you have learned new things and can try again without making the same mistakes. Success requires you try.
