Proactively Manage Your Digital Reputation

social mediaSince customers, clients, and potential employers can research us 24/7, we’re all constantly marketing ourselves  — even when we’re not actually trying to do so. Here are three ways to control how others see your digital self:

  • Make sure your online and offline personas match. If your passion and education are in environmental engineering, your social media profiles should reflect that, not just your love of food or dogs.
  • Curate your search results. People rely chiefly on their top-10 Google search results to make decisions about you. Set up your handle on Twitter, LinkedIn, and other networking sites as “firstnamelastname” (instead of, say, partyguy44).
  • Establish your credibility. Participate in forums and communities that focus on your specialties. You don’t have to be the most active participant. Even smart periodic contributions help you build a reputation as a thought leader.
  • Post articles of interest. Don’t just post personal details and events. Share professional information in your industry. This helps position yourself as a thought leader.
