Start With Honesty

pinocchioI received an email from a Constant Contact vendor telling me how happy they were to meet me at a recent business expo. There was just one problem. I didn’t attend that expo. I registered for the expo, but didn’t attend. Obviously they got my email from the registration list. Many vendors reach out to the people on the registration list. It’s an excellent way to reach potential customers, if done correctly.

However, this vendor started off by lying. It would have been easy for them to start the email with “We’re sorry we missed you.” Instead they pretended to have met me. Why risk a potential customer over something so ridiculous? Instead, start off right. Here are some suggestions for following up with expo attendees.

  • Reach out to those that actually came to your booth. Follow up on conversations to refresh their memories. If you offered a special at the show, reiterate the offer.
  • Introduce yourself to attendees you didn’t speak to. Say something like, “We’re sorry we missed you.” Introduce yourself. You may also want to put together a special offer for them to peak their interest.
  • Get them to subscribe. Don’t simply put everyone on your mailing list. Offer them the opportunity to subscribe and let them choose to. A subscriber that has no interest in your company is of no use to you.
