Don’t Discard An Old Idea Just Because Its Old

There has been quite a bit written about how to reach the younger generations. Social media, app downloads, and SMS marketing are mentioned often. However, a recent experience showed me not to make assumptions.

I walked in my kids playing video games. They were playing a Playstation 2 and a Nintendo 64. They have newer but they prefer playing the older systems. Another time I walked in on them listening to music. Each of them has a iPhone with toms of music. They were listening to a song they have on MP3. They weren’t listening to the MP3 though, they were listening to a vinyl record (yes, I have record players and many vinyl records).

The final thing that struck me was how excited my youngest son got when LEGO sent him a print magazine in the mail. He is online all the time and gets emails all the time. Having something arrive in the mail excited him.

In each case they preferred something considered “old fashioned” to the latest and greatest. What does this say? Keep older methods in the mix.
