Spam By Any Other Name

messengerEveryone is familiar with email spam. It started when email gained popularity with Nigerian princes asking for your help to get their money out of the country. It quickly divided itself into two camps, fraudulent spam (like the Nigerian prince) and commercial spam which tried to sell you something the way junk mail clogged your mailbox. Salespeople trying to avoid being labelled spammers moved into other venues. Now LinkedIn mailboxes and Facebook Messenger can fill up with people trying to sell you things. Whether its social or email, its still spam.

Sending a bulk Facebook message trying to sell may seem like a good idea. After all, these are people who know you. It’s still spam. Sending messages via LinkedIn about your services may seem perfectly normal. After all, LinkedIn is for business. Wrong. LinkedIn is for building connections for your business, not spamming people.

In order for a sales pitch to not be spam, you must talk to the recipient before hand. The medium of your contact doesn’t matter, the key is that you need their permission before you sell to them. If you don’t have permission, it’s spam, no matter how well intentioned you may be.
