Most people find it difficult to do what an innovator does best: link the disconnected. Here are three strategies for developing the habit of making new connections:
- Just go for it. When linkages between ideas don’t come readily, force them. Consider: What else could this concept be related to?
- Shake things up a little. If you’re having trouble making associations, try forcing them to come to the surface. See what comes to mind when you combine seemingly unrelated ideas or words. It’s possible that the innovative combinations will spark a fresh thought.
- Repeat. According to research, if you practice associational thinking for a long enough period of time, the work will stimulate you rather than weary you.
